"The Prodigal Son" Charlie Mackesy
At church a couple of Sundays ago, our guest Jon Petersen asked us to reflect on the following scripture:
“Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us to be holy and without fault in His eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ” Ephesians 1:4-5
What incredible words and what an incredible God that we can not only know Jesus as Saviour but have a Father who loved us before we were conceived and adopted us into His family, not as slaves or orphans but as full sons and daughters with the full inheritance that that name invites.
As Jon was reminding us, the story of the Prodigal Son reminds us of how lavish the Father was, loving his son to the extreme by running to greet him whilst still far away, and bestowing upon him that all-important ring, that we can do business on behalf of our Father. Incredible for a son who, days before, was squandering away his father’s wealth.
As 21st Century Brits we can often forget that when we were far away, God ran towards each one of us, and that nothing we can do can change the course of the tidal wave of love that God has for us. We remember salvation but somehow stop short of the fullness of God’s plan for our lives.
On the Ignite discipleship course last year, we had 17 students meeting every Monday evening in term time to build together a foundation of Bible knowledge and discover together the fullness of our identity in Christ.
In January 2017, we are looking to run the course again, for a 7 month duration, on Monday evenings in term time at Revelation Central, the church offices on St. Pancras, Chichester.
